Phi Mu

Phi Mu was founded at Wesleyan Female College in 1852, during remarkable period when women's higher education was expanding and when fraternity as concept was beginning to emerge. Phi Mu holds distinction of being among very oldest women's fraternities, founded during era when collegiate education for women was still novel and when women's fraternity was completely revolutionary idea. Wesleyan Female College, one of first institutions dedicated to providing comprehensive education for women, provided ideal environment for establishing fraternity committed to developing exceptional women. The founders of Phi Mu understood that women deserved intentional community supporting their intellectual and moral development. Phi Mu's 1852 founding positioned it at very forefront of women's fraternity movement. During 1850s, most institutions of higher learning excluded women entirely or restricted them to separate, often inferior, educational experiences. Wesleyan Female College represented progressive institution challenging these limitations.
