Phi Iota Alpha

Phi Iota Alpha was founded at Florida International University in Miami, Florida on April 18, 1987, during a transformative period for Latino communities in American higher education and society. The 1980s witnessed significant growth in Latino enrollment at universities, emergence of Latino activism around educational equity and representation, and increasing visibility and power of Latino communities in major American cities. Florida International University, located in Miami with large Latino population and mission to serve diverse communities, provided ideal environment for establishing the first Latino-interest social fraternity. The founders of Phi Iota Alpha recognized that Latino men deserved fraternity community supporting their educational goals, celebrating their cultural heritage, and developing them as leaders committed to serving their communities. Phi Iota Alpha's founding as the first Latino-interest social fraternity was historically groundbreaking.
